One of the most frequent questions we’re asked at Chicken Rescue UK, besides “are you all chicken mad?”, is “why do people adopt chickens?”.
Chickens, be it hens or cockerels have such vibrant personalities, no two are the same. Whether it is hearing them talk to one another, or watching them find a nice plot of dirt in the sun to bathe in, we doubt you will ever be tired of them. Watching them run around is such a treat, it always brings a smile to our faces. Few things in life are better than holding a chicken in your arms and hearing it purr after all.
Chickens can generally get on with most other pets, however we recommend that they are introduced over time and supervised. We believe chickens make excellent first pets for children as well. As a low maintenance pet, chickens can largely be left to their own devices. After initial costs, there are also fairly inexpensive. They are also a great source of natural fertilizer, and will cut down your grass like a natural lawn mower! Cockerels are protective of their flock and make excellent guard animals for them.
However, nothing is more rewarding than seeing their improvement over time. Adopting a chicken is a commitment, and in taking one into your family you will be able to see how their condition improves over time, with feathers coming in and certain personalities getting more confident.
We here at CRU are honoured to be giving ex-commercial hens a second chance at life, and that’s down to our volunteers and rehomers who are all so vital. We love what we do here and we want to continue helping chickens across the UK.
So please consider rehoming a chicken at one of our upcoming rehomes by filling in the form below to join our waiting list, and who knows you might even get and egg or two at the end of the day.
Please be aware that we take Avian Influenza (AI) very seriously so we follow the strict guidelines issued by DEFRA and their related Biosecurity measures.
