You might be wondering why is it that people choose to share their lives with chickens when there are many other more ‘traditional’ pets out there.
Well, here at CRU we’re here to tell you that we think chickens make amazing pets, particularly well deserving rescued chickens, and there are tonnes of reasons why.
Today we’re sharing with you the top 5 reasons why people choose to keep chickens as pets.
1. They have BIG personalities – Just like other pets, chickens all have individual characters. Ask any chicken keeper and they will be able to describe each of their chooks traits and always have stories to tell about their flock.
2. Fresh Eggs – Once you’ve enjoyed a freshly laid chicken egg you will never want to go back to the supermarket eggs which can sit around for a month before even hitting the shelves!
3. They are GREAT with kids – Raising a flock of chickens is a great way to instil positive values in your children such as learning about responsibility, compassion for living creatures and the circle of life.
4. They are low-maintenance and inexpensive to raise – After the initial cost of setting up a suitable living area for your chooks, they are cheap and easy to care for. They don’t need to be walked or groomed which are big bonuses!
5. They are great for the garden – Chickens are a great source of all-natural fertiliser perfect for giving your garden a boost. Chickens love eating grass, so they’ll cut down on mowing! Chooks can also help keep any unwanted pests under control. Just be sure to protect any plants that you don’t want eating from your feathered friends (they can’t tell the difference!)
Keep in mind there are many more benefits to keeping feathered friends, these are just a few of the reasons. If you’d like to find out why so many people love chickens consider rehoming some of our lovely rescued chooks, and fill in our reservations form when you are ready to jump in!
